Fallen police officers to be honored today

Ceremonies in Madison and Beloit will commemorate police officers who have died in the line of duty and serve as a reminder of the daily dangers faced by law enforcement.  Today in Madison, the 18th annual Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony was scheduled for noon on the Capitol grounds. Three Wisconsin law enforcement officers were expected to be added to the memorial during the ceremony. They are:

Police officer Jackie Ryden of the Prescott Police Department who died while directing traffic at a house fire on Sept. 2, 2006.

-- Deputy Steven Hahn of the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office killed while directing traffic at an automobile accident on Jan. 5, 2008.

-- Deputy Frank Fabiano Jr. of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on May 16, 2007.

With pressure growing on Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., to end her presidential campaign, "intermediaries" have resumed discussing the possibility of an Obama-Clinton "dream team" ticket.  "I think it's very much a possibility and there are others around Sen. Clinton, other top Democrats who think the strongest ticket would be a joint ticket," George Stephanopolous, ABC News' chief Washington correspondent, said Monday on "Good Morning America."

Suspected Illegal Immigrant Charged With Rape, Impregnating 10-Year-Old Girl

ST. ANTHONY, Idaho —  A suspected illegal immigrant has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who later gave birth in eastern Idaho.

The girl gave birth less than two weeks ago by caesarian section at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Fremont County Sheriff Ralph C. Davis and other authorities said. Officials would not disclose the gender, date of birth or paternity of the baby.  "I wouldn't have believed a 10-year-old could conceive in the first place," Davis said.  A hospital spokeswoman would not discuss the condition of the girl or the baby and would not say whether either was still in the hospital Wednesday.

 

Former KUSD Superintendent offered top administrator job at Central High School Scott Pierce, former superintendent of the Kenosha Unified School District, has been offered a contract for the top administrator job at the Central High School District in Paddock Lake. Pierce, who retired from Unified last summer and is currently the president of the Milwaukee Academy of Science in Milwaukee, became the school board’s choice after a second interview Saturday, a press release made public Monday said. Central currently has an interim superintendent, Ken Moe, whose contract expires in June. The board began the process of finding a permanent superintendent after Douglas Potter announced earlier this year that he would not be returning from a medical leave.The contract offered Pierce includes an annual salary of $125,000 and a start date of July 1.

Wal-Mart, Costco Sales Gain as Shoppers Seek Bargains May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp. reported April sales that rose more than analysts estimated as U.S. consumers, contending with gasoline at a record $3.65 a gallon, sought discounts on clothing and food.  Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, said sales at stores open at least a year climbed 3.2 percent, beating its forecast and sending the shares higher. Industry sales climbed 3.6 percent, the most since March 2007, the International Council of Shopping Centers said
